Depression and Heart Disease - Which Comes First? 

If there is a connection between depression and heart disease researchers are trying to decide which is cause and which is effect.

There have been studies that seem to indicate a link between heart disease and depression."People who have heart disease are likely to be depressed, people with depression seem more likely to develop heart disease, and depression combined with heart disease is a double dose of adversity"query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html 

If there is a connection between depression and heart disease, researchers are trying to decide which is cause and which is effect.  Do the chemicals released from being depressed cause heart disease or do those with heart disease neglect their health care because of depression?

I know that in my case, I certainly became depressed after my emergency bypass surgery.  It was overwhelming loss - my health and my job.  I would like to know what others have experienced?
